Module 2: Building Digital Competence through Self-Nudging

Module Introduction :

This module helps you build and strengthen your digital skills through simple, practical self-nudging strategies.

You will reflect on your current digital skills, identify areas for growth, and learn how to integrate digital tools meaningfully into your teaching routine. Most importantly, this module encourages you to take ownership of your ongoing digital learning journey, embracing continuous curiosity and improvement.

Nudging uses subtle cues or prompts to influence behaviour without limiting choice, a concept introduced by behavioural economists Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein. Self-nudging is when you create these cues for yourself. Behavioural science shows that reminders, progress tracking, and small rewards help people act consistently, making digital teaching actions more automatic and rewarding.

Objective:

To equip educators with practical self-nudging strategies that support the development and sustained improvement of digital competence in their teaching. This module focuses on low-barrier, self-directed methods to build routines, confidence, and skill with digital tools.

Learning Objectives:

  • Take ownership of their digital learning journey.
  • Reflect on personal digital strengths and growth areas.
  • Apply self-nudging strategies to support digital teaching practice.
  • Develop small, sustainable habits to strengthen digital competence.
  • Maintain a curious, adaptive mindset for ongoing digital growth.

Expected Outcomes:

After completing the module, learners will:

  • Have a clearer view of their digital skills and development needs.
  • Recognise self-nudging as a practical way to build digital skills.
  • Be able to design and use simple self-nudges in their teaching.
